Career Progression with Core Assets

Archived: Posted July 23, 2013

Core Assets Fostering - Northern IrelandAmy McAlister joined Core Assets in September 2007 as placements officer and, with the help of Core Assets has just qualified as a social worker. Amy is excited about developing in her new role and explains about her career so far at Core Assets:

“I was really keen on working for Core Assets in the placements role as they were looking for someone with business and marketing experience and an interest in social care.

I really enjoyed the social care environment and meeting the young people and carers, so in 2008 I started undertaking CYPSS work on a casual basis alongside my placements role. These two roles linked together really well as I was involved in matching the young people with carers and then had the opportunity to get to know the young people at activities and see them develop.

“It was the CYPSS work that really sparked my decision to progress into a career in social work.”

I spoke with the company about doing a social work degree and applied to UCAS for a place at Queens University, Belfast. I was accepted and started September 2010 with the full support and backing of the company.

“I was delighted that Core Assets kept a job open for me at the end of my degree and allowed me to carry on working with CYPSS on a casual basis.”

This was the perfect situation as I loved working for Core Assets and didn’t want to leave the company but wanted to progress and develop my skills in something I was interested in.

I really enjoyed the degree; especially being able to go on placement and put into practice what I’d been learning at university. I worked in a number of different placements for 80-100 days, including a placement working with adults with learning disabilities and one at a maternity hospital. The placements enabled me to broaden my knowledge about different aspects of social care.

I graduated on 1 July 2013 with a first class honours degree in social work and was one of only three students in the whole year to receive the Brian Rankin prize for the best performing students. I started my new role as a supervising social worker in the Belfast office on 5th July 2013 and am already enjoying being back with the company full time and having my own caseload.

“I’m so grateful to Core Assets for supporting me with my degree and career progression and feel very valued by the company for its commitment to staff. I’ve come back energised and enthusiastic about making a difference to young people’s lives.”
