Care Leaver Embarks on African Trip of a Lifetime

Care Leaver Embarks on an African Trip of a LifetimeWe’re always keen to shout about the achievements of our looked after children and young people.

So we’re thrilled to share the news that one of our care leavers is off on a once-in-a-lifetime volunteer trip to Africa.

Eighteen year-old Monier lives in a ‘staying put’ arrangement with his foster carers in the North East. He’ll be visiting Malawi at the end of July for ten weeks with youth development charity Lattitude Global Volunteering.

After a challenging interview in London, Monier was selected as one of twelve young people to go on the trip, which will involve working on a local project to help young people in a rural area develop vital life skills.

The team at our Chester-le-Street office have helped Monier raise almost £1,500 for his trip by hosting a number of events including a tombola, cake sale, and pie and pea supper.

Monier says: “I would like to thank everyone who has made this trip to Malawi a reality for me. Words can’t describe how thankful I am for everything you’ve done.

“You’ve gone the extra mile to help me and fight my corner in so many different situations – without your support this wouldn’t have been possible. Your help will ensure children in third world countries are able to read and write, and progress on to national education.”

We look forward to Monier updating us on his progress abroad – so watch this space!

Lattitude Global Volunteering provides opportunities for 17-25 year olds to make a real difference to the lives of people in communities with very limited resources. For more information, please visit the charity’s website: www.lattitude.org.uk.
