‘Can you foster?’ in Wales

Archived: Posted March 11, 2013

We are looking to boost the number of foster carers in Wales with the launch of our Spring 2013 ‘Can You Foster?’ campaign.

Latest figures indicate a further 600* foster carers must be recruited in 2013 to alleviate the shortfall in Wales alone.

Rhyl foster carer, David, has been fostering for five years and spoke about the rewards, the challenges and the skills needed to take up this fulfilling career.

“I worked as a property developer before joining Core Assets” said David.

“It was my wife Debbie’s idea to look into fostering, and at first I was just supporting her, but as we found out more about it I realised just how much I could relate to children in care. And now I’m a full time carer.

“Fostering is very much a team effort. Debbie and I work together, with the support from Core Assets professionals, other carers and our fantastic daughter, Amy. We’re really proud of the job we do and the difference it makes to young people.

“Fostering can be challenging but it’s hugely rewarding too. You need a lot of patience, a desire to learn new skills and the ability to see something from a young person’s point of view.”

By working with Core Assets Fostering, carers benefit from round-the-clock support and on-going training as well as regular carer forums.

David continued: “What I’ve found is that the training and support is outstanding. For example, I’ve completed a level three diploma in health and social care, something I never thought I would achieve after leaving school at 15. I’ve got an incredibly fulfilling career now and I’m immensely proud of what I do.”

Foster carers come from all walks of life with all kinds of professional backgrounds; from teachers and residential carers to butchers and bakers.
