First fostering placements: “I don’t know who was more scared, him or me!”

I was working as an event chef before I decided to become a foster carer. I looked Foster Care Associates up on Google, got in touch with them and from there the process started.
10 days after going to fostering panel in November 2013, I had a young man of 14 with severe ADHD and learning disabilities placed with me. We weren’t sure who was scared the most, him or me! But for the last 18 months he’s turned into a great young man who is about to go to college to study Life Skills.
His resilience has really overwhelmed me. He’s been taken from his family, he was at a boarding school which he stopped staying at, and then also changed to a special school which met his needs better.
He has grown up in our family and is a part of our family; he now calls me spare mum!
The best thing to come out of being a foster carer so far is to have watched this young 14 year old change and grow with all his achievements over the years. It’s very fulfilling to witness the transformation.
