A year of giving

Archived: Posted February 27, 2013

It’s that time of year when we inevitably take a look back over the past twelve months, evaluate what we’ve achieved and decide whether it’s been a good one. Well we’ve been doing just that and we’ve had a pretty busy year overall.

As a company we always make sure we recognise our carer achievements, champion young carers and the work they do to help their parents in their fostering role and make sure we tell all the wonderful stories that celebrate the progress of the children and young people we are able to place.

We’re always doing stuff for charity, we’ve done a lot for local as well as world-wide charities too, so here’s a round-up of what our staff, carers, looked after children and birth children have been up to over the last year:

We’re fond of a bike ride it seems; the pedal variety and the motorised kind too. Back in September our very own Principal social worker for Stepps, Ian Borthwick, took part in a charity bike ride with 8,500 other cyclists to raise money for charity. And on Saturday 8th December our carers from the North East region, Alan and Madeline Forster joined 100 other bikers for the annual Santa Motorbike Ride in aid of local baby hospice Zoe’s Place that you might have seen on Facebook recently. Riding through Teesside to Redcar in their Santa suits, the bikers were quite a sight to behold!

We’re partial to the odd slice of cake too (who isn’t?) and have had many a coffee morning across the regions to raise money for many worthwhile charities including Macmillan Cancer fund with many regions taking part in the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ campaign during the month of September. And still on the subject of food, a carer from North Wales, Jane Senger managed to raise £350 for Bulgarian children’s charity For Our Children when she hosted a ‘Come Dine with Me’ evening in October for 25 of her fellow foster carers.

We don’t mind a bit of a trek up a mountain either. We remember how one foster family from the South completed a sponsored climb to the top of Tryfan in North Wales raising £400 for Water Aid in June.

And we’ve even gone to extremes of jumping out of aeroplanes – all in the name of charity of course. In this case it was 19 year old Ellie, a young carer from Norwich whose sponsored skydive back in July raised almost £700 for the British Heart Foundation.

Looking back then, we’ve got quite a lot to be proud of really, because not only do our staff, carers, looked after children and birth children do wonderful things in the name of fostering, they go that extra mile to do something for others too, this has got to be worth a mention, don’t you think?
