A Marathon Adventure!

Archived: Posted March 25, 2013

Core Assets Fostering - EasternOn 21st April this year, Cat Foley, self-confessed charity fundraiser and Supervising Social Worker with Core Assets Fostering in Peterborough, will be lining up with thousands of others to run the London Marathon.

“I’ve always wanted to do the marathon in fancy dress and raise lots of money for charity, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do!”

Cat will be running the famous 26.2 miles dressed as a butterfly and though no stranger to running, she’s stepping up her training in readiness for the big day.

“The purpose of this event is so I can raise as much money as possible to buy playground equipment for a community in Uganda through a UK charity called East African Playgrounds. Play is a crucial part of a child`s development. Unfortunately, not all children in the world have the opportunity to embrace play in a safe environment. By raising money to fund this playground project, we can help give children this opportunity.”

In the past Cat has had many ‘adventures’ on her fundraising journey; spending a month in Romania on various children’s projects and cycling from Land’s End to John O Groats with two friends, no support vehicle and just a 2 man tent to sleep in!

Building for the future

Once she has recovered from running the marathon, Cat plans to travel to Uganda in August to spend a month with other volunteers and the local people of Uganda to build the playground she’s raised money for. But as well as the children having a new playground to use, the project also promotes sustainability because the local Ugandan workers will be equipped with skills for any future opportunities.

“I want to stress that the money I raise from the marathon is spent directly on the playground equipment. I’m funding my flights and accommodation myself for the trip to Uganda” says Cat.

We all wish Cat the best of luck and we’ll keep you up to date on how she gets on.
