A Leap of Faith

Core Assets Fostering - A Leap of FaithHi, I’m Jim, I’ve been married to Dawn for 21 years and we have two children, Bethany is 15 and Dan is nearly 18. We live in Shrivenham near Swindon.

We first looked into fostering about 6 years ago and went to a presentation in Oxford but the timing wasn’t right for us. About 3 years later we looked at fostering again but we were having some difficulties with our own son so again, the timing wasn’t right.

At the beginning of 2012 I decided I’d had enough of working at the Honda car factory as I’d been there for 18 years and hadn’t enjoyed it for several years. So, we decided that I’d be the one to give up full-time employment and become the main carer. Dawn enjoyed her job at the local school so she was happy to carry on working there.

Our own children had become more independent and didn’t need us as much anymore, so we decided that this was the right time for us to begin fostering. We did some research and contacted 6 different agencies. After a few meetings and visits, we decided to go with Core Assets Fostering and soon we were completing the form F assessment with our assessor, Mary. This was very involved and at first it felt quite intrusive, but after a while we became used to doing all that was necessary to go to panel for approval.

In the summer, I took a leap of faith and resigned from my job which was very scary as we had no idea whether we would be approved or when we would get our first placement. We went to panel about a month later and all went well, we were approved to have 2 young people. Dawn and I celebrated with a coffee at a pavement café.

After several phone calls and false alarms our first placement arrived about 5 weeks later. “J”, a 15 year old boy, has been with us ever since. A few days later, ”A”, also a boy of 15, arrived for just over 3 weeks respite. We had a house full of teenagers and it was great to see how quickly everyone got along and got used to living with each other.

Time has gone by so quickly since then, when “A” went back to his full-time carers I realised that our first chapter of fostering was over. All of my family have said it’s amazing how quickly you become attached and feel protective over the children in your care. We’re having another 15 year old child for a short respite stay soon and we’re all looking forward to it. I’ve already bought tickets for us all to see the latest 007 film as he’ll arrive on its release date!

I’ve been really pleased and impressed with the support and on-going training I’ve received from Core Assets and feel I’ve started a challenging and worthwhile new career. The training’s been very helpful and it’s great to meet other foster carers and start building up a network of support, help and advice.

I’m so pleased I made that leap of faith as I’m finding this new job very rewarding and interesting. Some of the people I’ve met are a real breath of fresh air and I know I’ll make some good friends over time. I’m keen to do as much training and support work as I can to gain experience and knowledge and in the future I’d like to become involved with charity work as well.
