A musician turned foster carer is backing a campaign to encourage more Glaswegians to think about a career in fostering and providing vulnerable young people with a stable home environment.

The 38-year-old, from Glasgow, explained why she became involved in fostering and in doing so discredited the myth that carers have to be married or have previous experience of raising children to foster.

She said: “I always thought I would foster or adopt. I used to ask my mum to do it when I was a kid. I decided it was the right time to do it and help out some children who need it.

“There have been ups and downs and it’s not always easy but it has been really rewarding. I have done all the training FCA offers which has been extremely useful and I have had good support.

“I have never had children of my own but that means I can come at fostering from a different and positive angle. I came in fresh and could adapt easily and I think that has been of benefit.

“All carers are completely different and need to respond to each child’s individual needs. You are always learning and the children are usually the ones teaching you!”

Tracey added: “You need patience to be a foster carer, that’s for sure. You also need acceptance – you need to accept the young people for who they are. You can help them reach their potential but you can’t change them.

“You also need to be thick skinned and have lots of love to give. A sense of humour is also important and you need to have fun as that positivity will transmit to the looked after child.”

Tracey studied music at university and remains a keen musician and has utilised her skills to lead the FCA Scotland choir at the UK-wide competition within FCA, The Big Sing Off, for the last two years.

She will be joining the FCA team on the first day of Foster Care Fortnight in the centre of Glasgow as a spectacular car rally, which will see 10 emblazoned Fiat 500s hit 10 locations in 10 days across the UK, makes its way into the city centre for its first stop.

The FCA team will be in Buchanan Street, outside the Royal Concert Hall, and in St Enoch Square, between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Monday 12 May, where FCA staff and Tracey will be on hand to give information and advice about being a foster carer.
