Shameen’s Story

Archived: Posted April 25, 2016

Shameen Akhtar 45 and her husband Usman Khalid 46 from Huddersfield took on their first fostering placement in October 2014. Commenting on their experiences, Shameen said:

“We thought about fostering for a long time and as our children were growing up, with just our youngest daughter at home, we thought the time was right to look into it further. A friend of Usman Khalid’s was already a foster carer and he invited us to an information evening with FCA and since then we haven’t looked back.

“From the very beginning we felt strongly that we would be open to any placement that was offered to us – as long as we were considered to be the right carers for the child. We don’t think about it in terms of ‘complex placements’ or ‘challenging children’ because all children and young people deserve a good loving home and there is so much more to a child than a profile can ever tell you.

“When we took on our first placement it was challenging, but we saw the rewards very quickly. I suppose I would sum it up as when we see that we are making a difference and there is a real connection between us and the child we are caring for. I remember watching our new family group and being struck by how at ease we all were together, just mucking about like families do, watching TV and listening to music – that meant everything.

“Being a foster carer is worrying at times, but nobody would think caring for children is an easy job. We also have the full support of our wider family and the team at FCA are always on hand to help.

“Obviously we think about the future and when a child leaves our care it will be heart wrenching because they so quickly become part of your ‘every day’. But our focus has to be on what is best for each child and their future happiness.

“The training we have received so far has been invaluable and we are looking forward to doing more of the training that FCA offers. It is so reassuring to know that there is someone at the end of the phone to chat things through with. Even though you are most likely to be doing things the right way, just knowing you can check gives you great peace of mind.

“My advice to those who are new to fostering would be patience, patience, patience! You will certainly have your patience tested and that’s where all the training will be so invaluable. It’s vital to be open minded and try and banish any stereo-types that you may have about what somebody is like before you get to know them.

“Before we started fostering, I did wonder how we were going to manage and there have been troubles along the way, but I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. I’d tell anyone who is thinking about fostering to go for it. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”
