Nicola and Paul’s story

Archived: Posted April 25, 2016

Nicola and her husband Paul have recently fostered a young mother and her child, having already looked after eight young children with Foster Care Associates over the last five years.  Nicola explains why they decided the time was right to welcome a parent and child placement into their home, to support a young mum build-up her parenting skills and adapt to the challenges of motherhood.

“Five years after our incredible fostering journey began, we had already fostered eight young children with Foster Care Associates and felt as a family that we were ready for our next big adventure. With so many different types of fostering placements available like respite, long term, short term, and step down, and having already experienced and thoroughly enjoyed a number of these, we decided we’d like to try a mother and baby placement.

“After completing all of the in-depth assessment and training required, we were looking forward to taking on a new placement but decided we weren’t quite ready at the time as our birth son was just six months old.

“When our son turned two, the time was right and in a very short space of time a young mother and her baby were on their way to us straight from the hospital. We already had two children in our care so the whole family were excited to welcome the new arrivals. I must confess that I was more nervous waiting for them to arrive than I was the first night home with our own son!

“Our house was very busy but we pride ourselves on keeping a calm, loving, fun and safe home. Juggling school runs with midwife visits, health visitors, training and much more, meant it was fast paced and emotional, yet incredibly rewarding. I used to work on the trading floor of a French investment bank many years ago and hadn’t really seen the benefit of my time and management training until then! I definitely called on all of the techniques I had learnt all those years ago during the early days of the new placement.

“Foster Care Associates were extremely supportive throughout and ensured we had all the equipment and training we could need. The weeks absolutely flew by and sadly the placement soon came to an end.

“People have asked me if we would do it again and we can safely say that we wouldn’t hesitate to take on another young parent and child. In fact, we are already in the process of being matched so fingers crossed it happens again soon as there is always room at our house.

“My advice to those who are new to fostering would be that communication is key in foster care. Foster Care Associates offers invaluable training and if you feel you need training in something that is not offered, just ask. There is always someone at the other end of the phone to chat things through, as each placement brings different needs and issues. Support groups are also available to you, but they only work if carers engage so make sure you attend, stay focused and most importantly have fun as a family.”
