Lesley Crawford’s Story

Archived: Posted May 10, 2017

‘’ Don’t let anyone or anything stand in the way of you providing a safe place for these children to call home’’

Lesley Crawford (66) from Seahouses, on the Northumberland coast has been a foster carer for 25 years. Lesley started her fostering journey with the local authority and transferred to Foster Care Associates (FCA) 15 years ago for more support.

Having recently been presented with an award for her long service commitment and dedication to providing outstanding care to children by Foster Care Associates (FCA) North East, Lesley reflects on her time as a foster carer.

Lesley said: ‘’I feel very honoured to have received the long service recognition from Foster Care Associates. I have simply had the best time looking after a number of children and young people each with their own set of challenges and rewards. I wouldn’t swap this experience or my 15 years’ service with FCA for anything in this world.’’

Lesley is currently looking after an 11 year old boy who will stay with her on a long term basis but over the years has looked after a number of children and young people from different walks of life.

Lesley said: ‘’I started my fostering career when my two birth children were teenagers and no longer needed my undivided attention. I fostered with the local authority for 10 years, however, towards the end of this period they were going through a difficult period and I felt a real lack of support as a result of this. A few foster carers I knew had transferred to FCA and recommended that I do the same.

‘’Over the years I have looked after predominantly teenagers but since then I have cared for children requiring short term, emergency care, provided families with respite support as well as looking after children before they are introduced to their new adoptive families.

‘’FCA have been incredibly supportive over the years as have my family. FCA were particularly helpful through a difficult time when my husband passed away 4 years ago. It was fostering that helped me through this period.

‘’One of the most memorable things I have experienced over the years was the overwhelming support I received from both FCA as well as care leavers who rallied around me in support and attended my husband’s funeral. Some of the children I used to care for travelled on bus and several others got in contact with me straight away to share their love and support. To know that these children still cared and wanted to say goodbye was really touching.’’

Lesley explains what the best thing about being a foster carer is and offers some advice to people considering becoming foster carers. She said: ‘’The best thing about being a foster carer is being able to make a difference. You don’t always see it straight away but when you do, the feeling is amazing. It’s so worthwhile knowing that you are having a direct impact on the lives of these vulnerable young people.

‘’If you are considering becoming a foster carer then my advice would be to go for it. Don’t let anyone or anything stand in the way of you providing a safe place for these children to call home. We can’t give up on these children they need us.
