Julia & Mark’s story – Helping disabled children and their families

Archived: Posted April 25, 2016

Julia and Mark Knibbs from Sutton Coldfield have been foster carers with Foster Care Associates (FCA) since 2003. Their fostering journey began with Brandon, a child described with limited life expectancy. As a young family at the time, Julia, Mark and their two birth children, Zak and Abigail, opened their home and hearts to him.

They gave Brandon opportunities to learn to swim and visit places such as Australia, and challenged the stereotypes and misconception of what children with his level of disability can do. Their level of commitment and dedication to this little boy was demonstrated in their decision to adopt him. But they also decided to continue their fostering career with FCA as short breaks carers – offering temporary fostering to other young people with disabilities, to provide some respite for their families.

Since being involved with short breaks, Julia and Mark have supported four children and their extended families. A number of these children have complex health needs and Julia and Mark have worked in a versatile way with each of the children in their care to provide a nurturing and safe environment where the children can relax and enjoy themselves. For Julia and Mark it is clearly about seeing ability rather than disability.
