Joanne and Andrew’s Story

“As this is a second marriage for both of us we discussed having children of our own, but after looking into fostering we felt it was right for us. I had run my own bridal and party shop for some years and wanted to do something different and everything came together once we started to seriously consider fostering. We did a lot of research to find the right agency and we chose FCA because they offered the most support and training.

“The training FCA offers appealed to me because it enables me to learn and develop through my career as a carer. The training has taught me and my husband so much about parenting. In particular, we draw on the attachment training all the time to know how to react to all types of normal family situations.

“I became a full time carer from the start and my husband has since done the same. We get so much from fostering – the best moments are when you see the progress the children are making because of your care. For example, a child went from needing a lot of support at school and not interacting with other children to doing really well with his work and making lots of friends. He was completely transformed and that is just wonderful.

“If a child has the right support, love and encouragement, you cannot believe the difference it can make. Things that we take for granted in ‘normal’ family life such as trips to the seaside or going to the cinema – just spending time with the child and showing an interest – can have a transformational impact.

“For those that are new to fostering, I would tell them never to be put off by things they read in a child’s profile. In our experience, things are never as challenging as you think they might be. If someone had told me before we fostered what we would have been capable of doing, such as parent and child placements, I would not have believed them.  The agency is always there to help and we talk to other carers in support groups all the time to get advice.

“On a daily basis, there is someone at FCA to talk to if you need them and they have also been great with my youngest daughter, who still lives at home, in helping us to support her through the fostering experience.

“To anyone who is thinking about becoming a foster carer, I would say to them that it will absolutely change your life in such a positive way.”
