With over 10 years fostering experience, Jan and Peter Dixon from Manchester have a wealth of knowledge looking after teenagers with complex emotional needs.

Since the couple began fostering with FCA North West, they have welcomed over 25 looked after children and young people into their home, offering a safe and nurturing family environment to help them develop and achieve their dreams.

Prior to becoming a foster carer, Jan worked as a child minder while her husband Peter was a builder.   The couple have two birth children and, as a family they enjoy a host of activities and interests which they share with foster children from all walks of life.

“As a family, we really enjoy fostering teenagers.  Having brought up two girls of our own, I enjoy the banter, fashion dilemmas and hair calamities,” says Jan.

“Teenagers can be challenging but to help them through this tough time in their lives is what is so rewarding.  We drive so much pleasure watching them grow up happy and healthy and embracing life.”

Working closely with professionals from across the social care sector, the Dixon’s believe that it is the team approach which FCA adopts which has enabled them to taken on board the challenges of fostering.

Jan explains: “Working with FCA we have a network of professionals, who are always on hand to offer us support, whatever issues we have to deal with.  It is FCA’s ‘team parenting’ model of practice which has ensured every placement is properly supported by a dedicated social worker, therapist, education liaison officer and support worker.  For us this works really well.

“There is also the training package which FCA provides which has been invaluable.  As well as attending regular training sessions, we get together with other carers so that we can share our experiences with like minded foster carers,” Jan adds.

“At times to you can find yourself in situations which can be confrontational but working with FCA we are able to develop strategies which really help us to manage these difficult times.

“Fostering is part of our way of life.  We always keep in touch with many of the young people we look after.  To see these young people overcome many emotional hurdles and move on to adulthood with a positive attitude is just wonderful,” concludes Jan.

During their fostering career, Jan and Peter have played a key role in equipping young people with the life skills they need to move on to independent living.  They have also supported children through the transition of moving from short term foster care on to permanent care as well as helping to rehabilitate children back home to live with their birth families.
