Howard’s story

Archived: Posted October 4, 2016

Howard has over a decade’s fostering experience and has cared for several teenagers, as well as parents with their children.

“I have fostered for over ten years and my partner Jim joined me four years ago as a joint carer. We have undertaken a wide range of placements over the years; including a number of challenging teenagers.

“I completed the 6 day specialist Parent & Child Training and over the last year, jointly we have undertaken three different parent and child placements along with our other long term foster placements. These were:

  • A 22 year old mother with her newborn that came for six weeks and stayed for six months. At the end of the placement the mother was re-housed in her home town to live independently with her child.
  • A 31 year old mother and her baby and toddler came for a planned two-week respite period whilst their carers went on holiday.
  • A twenty-two year old mother with her new born from hospital.

“Some of the things involved when we take on parents with children are:

  • teaching, monitoring and supporting each parent in the care of their child;
  • providing a supportive, safe and nurturing environment;
  • developing budgeting and financial skills where needed;
  • developing parenting and independent skills.

“In addition to the comprehensive Parent & Child training we had at the start, we also receive regular support from our Supervising Social Worker and Support Workers. We also have access to therapeutic support if we need it.

“Jim and I particularly enjoy parent & child placements. Although there can be many challenges, we draw from a wide range of skills and these placements can be very rewarding.”
