Foster Carer from Bridgend wins national poetry competition

updated at 1:35 pm, July 11, 2017

A doting foster carer from Bridgend, South Wales has won a national poetry writing competition, run by leading independent fostering agency, Foster Care Associates (FCA).

Clare Williams poem about how fostering transforms lives was selected from hundreds of entries by FCA who ran the competition during Foster Care Fortnight in May this year.

FCA asked foster carers from all over the UK to submit poem’s that express their journey a foster carer. Clare, whose poem describes how with support and guidance from foster carers, children and young people in care are able to follow their dreams, was awarded first prize and won £500 towards a family holiday.

Delighted with receiving first prize for her poem Clare said: ‘’I was really pleased to be awarded first prize by FCA for the writing competition. I thoroughly enjoyed writing my poem having put a lot of time and thought into what I wanted to say.

‘’Over the years Dean and I have fostered a number of children and young people who have had their struggles and challenges. But with a lot of listening, perseverance and love, I feel we have changed and improved some young people’s lives.’’

Clare and her husband Dean have been foster carers with FCA for more than seven years. Dean, who is a carer representative for Cymru South Swansea, explains how fostering has changed their lives, he said:

“Not only have the lives of the children in our care changed but our lives have as well. For 20 years I was employed as a HGV driver but since becoming a foster carer it has inspired me to do my QCF level 3 in Health and Social Care for Children and Young People, which FCA helped me with. Because of this I decided to change my job and I now work in the children’s residential sector, hopefully making a difference to the young people that I care for. This has been inspired by fostering and I can now transfer skills from both jobs. ‘’

Ann-Marie Browning, regional manager at Foster Care Associates, Cymru South, said: ‘’Clare’s poem gave a wonderful representation of the Williams’ fostering journey, it was really well written and a favorite amongst so many other inspirational entries. The couple have made such a positive difference to the lives of so many children and young people over the seven year’s. I can’t thank them enough for their service and their commitment both to FCA and those in their care.’’

Clare’s poem:

I wanted to foster for such a long time,
All I had to do was persuade this hubby off mine,
Drip feeding the idea now and again,
Trying to promote what we could gain,
This went on for quite sometime,
Finally started my dream in 2009,
Off to skills to foster we went,
Two long days as a family we spent,
Really happy with how it how it went,
No more time persuading was spent,
We were all fully on board I’m pleased to say,
We were soon to be part of team FCA,
Lots of training and support we received,
Being approved by panel we were so pleased,
Not knowing what to expect deep down,
7 years later Dean wears the carer rep crown,
We’ve opened our hearts and our home,
Some of the children feel scared and alone,
Reaching out for someone to care,
Myself and Dean are always there,
Sometimes carers feel stress and strain,
But hang on in there you’ve got so much more to gain,
However small a difference you make,
You will never regret the choices you take,
A child you care for has low self – esteem,
But with your support and guidance they can  follow their dreams,
We never regret the decision we took,
So ring FCA and take a look.
