Deborah and Mally share their story of how they opened their doors and became foster parents to a number of children and young people across the North East.

Behind our front door lives ……..

We’re Deborah and Mally Preedy from Hartlepool in County Durham.  We’ve been fostering two siblings for the last three and a half years, as well as looking after our six year old adopted daughter.  The most recent addition to our family is a 12 week old white German Shephard!

The best thing about being a foster carer?

Providing a positive environment where children can feel safe and are able to thrive.  In many cases as foster carer’s we are the only constant in children’s lives and it’s important to be their advocate.  It’s wonderful to watch foster children accomplish their goals and develop new skills in life that will help them in their future. It’s a very rewarding career and you work from home. Fostering has given me a positive purpose in life.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer?

Talk to your children and extended family about your plans of becoming a foster carer and then do some research.  Don’t put it off until your older it’s not always something to do when you retire, children need carer’s of all ages.  If it’s something you have been thinking about for a while why put it off, just go for it. Think about the difference you could make to a child/young person’s life.

What have been your biggest achievements as a foster carer?

Each time a child moves on from our care knowing that we have made a difference to their lives and achieve their goals.

Being able to offer a long-term placement for children to give them a positive family life and a brighter future.

Fostering has provided us with our beautiful daughter who we fostered from seven months old and later adopted – this has been our biggest achievement.
