Chris and Amanda’s Story

“Stop thinking about it and just go for it – we wasted 10 years thinking about fostering, but I’m just so glad we’re doing it now”

As Chris and Amanda Powell, from Bilston, mark the first anniversary of becoming foster parents, their overwhelming observation is a wish they had done it sooner. “If anyone I meet mentions an interest in fostering, I tell them to stop thinking about it and just go for it – we wasted 10 years thinking about, but I’m just so glad we’re doing it now”, explains Amanda. FB_IMG_1453646769803[2305843009217890297]

It was the prospect of turning 50 that finally gave Amanda and Chris the impetus they needed to make their application to become foster carers. “It was a case of now or never” Amanda remarks. “We’d always wanted to have children, but hadn’t been able to have our own and fostering was always in the back of our minds. Fifty is a big milestone and neither of us wanted to be doing the same as we’d always done by the time our birthdays came around. We saw FCA on our local TV news programme, talking about becoming a foster carer and we applied almost immediately.”

Life is certainly different for the couple from Bilston and they now share their home with two teenage boys, with Amanda working as a full time foster carer and Chris working four days a week as a car salesman alongside his caring responsibilities. Despite the inevitable adjustments, the couple wouldn’t have life any other way: “Becoming a foster carer is life changing, but there are far more ups than downs”, observes Amanda. “I just love to see the boys thriving and being part of our family” she adds.

The family is grateful for all the support they have received since they decided to foster as Amanda explains: “My sister was really behind us and kept telling us we’d be great. It was invaluable to have that encouragement. We couldn’t ask for better support than we receive from FCA. Our supervising social worker, Aisha, is so reassuring and is always there when we need her.

FCA provides a comprehensive programme of support and training to its foster carers, with 24/7 access to help and a dedicated team to work alongside each foster family. They also facilitate opportunities to meet and share advice with other foster carers in each local area, as well as organising a programme of social activities for families to enjoy.

One year on, Amanda and Chris are relishing the opportunities and fun that fostering has brought to their lives. “It’s the most rewarding job you can do – to see these young people come on leaps and bounds. When I tell people I’m a foster carer, they often say they are impressed, but couldn’t do it themselves. But, they really could. It’s the most fulfilling job in the world if it’s what you want to do.”
