Behind Helen’s Door

Behind our front door lives ……..

Behind our front door lives ….Helen. I am the main carer but I couldn’t do it without the rest of my wonderful family!! There is my husband Ken and our two sons; Matthew is 22 and Alex is 19, but we have been fostering for almost 17 years so they were only five and three way back then. We live in Dorset and currently foster two young children aged four and 15 months who have lived with us for nine months.

The best thing about being a foster carer?

The best thing about being a foster carer is….Being able to make a difference to the lives of children and young people and allowing them to grow and develop in the knowledge they are safe from harm. It truly is an amazing feeling to know we have made a difference regardless of how small or big. It is wonderful to feel valued as part of a professional team who all want the best outcomes possible for each and every child in the care system.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer?

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer?….If you want a rewarding career, with good training opportunities, yet you still want to work from home to bring up your own family, then fostering is an excellent way to achieve all of these. We have been fostering for almost 17 years now and although it can be hard saying goodbye to all of the wonderful children we have cared for, it’s been the most incredible journey we have all ever been part of. Don’t stop and wonder if this career is right for you…take that step now and make a difference. Believe me it will be the best step you ever take!!

What have been your biggest achievements as a foster carer?

What have been your biggest achievements as a foster carer?…….Gosh…there have been so many memorable moments it’s hard to know where to start. I suppose the biggest achievement is knowing we have made a difference to the lives of 29 children, young people and parent and child placements, who over the years have allowed us to be part of their lives. We have laughed with them, cried with them and celebrated with them from memorable days together, good times and harder times, educational, personal and social achievements through to emotional times when we say goodbye for them to start the next chapter of their lives.  As parents of two wonderful sons, we were also extremely proud when our youngest son was given the title of “young foster carer award for the uk” for his dedication to helping all the foster children we have had the privileged to care for.
