Behind our front door lives ……..

We’re Denis and Ann from Blyth in Northumberland currently fostering two sibling girls who joined our family last summer.  We have had a number of placements over our fostering career and have enjoyed every minute.

The best thing about being a foster carer?

Making a difference in children’s lives, giving a child the best possible start in life, noise and laughter in the house. Working from home but being kept very busy.  Networking with other foster carers.  Seeing your foster child smile and enjoying life again.  Hearing our foster children laugh again.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer?

We wanted to foster years ago but decided to wait until our son was grown up.  Now we often say we wished we had gone ahead instead of waiting.  Don’t put off looking into it, get the information and have the talk.  If you can offer a child love and security make that call now!!!

What have been your biggest achievements as a foster carer?

Our current placements have grown into confident young people with aspirations, hopes and dreams; something they didn’t have when they came to us.  One of our girls has been integrated back into mainstream education and has just picked her GCSE options for next year; she was on a special needs statement with lots of intervention seven months ago. The youngest has moved up grades in all subjects and is enjoying life for the first time in a long time.  It was lovely to receive a call from the school thanking us for making her smile again!

Previous placements have gone on to build relationships with their families and gone home.  One moved on to independent living, now has a job with British Airways, lives in her own flat and is in regular contact with her mum and siblings.
