Avril---Carer-Story-(2)

Avril’s inspirational story started over ten years ago when she left the production line at her local paint factory to start the most rewarding journey of her life.

And she hasn’t looked back since. After running a play group for her local authority, mother-of-two Avril decided to use her experience of caring for children and teenagers to help some of Wales’s most vulnerable young people.

Single carer Avril, from Port Talbot, has now successfully cared for over 50 foster children, many of whom carry deep emotional scars from years of abuse and neglect.

Nothing can deter Avril from her dedication to providing a caring and stable home for the children in her care. “Of course, being a foster carer is an extremely challenging role”, she says, “but I am determined not to give up on these children. They deserve to be given a chance in life and by sticking with them through thick and thin, they start to believe in themselves and achieve their ambitions. It isn’t an easy ride but just to see these children smile again is good enough reason for me to continue fostering.”

When times get tough, Avril’s grateful to receive the support of her local FCA Cymru team. “The staff at FCA Cymru are fantastic and without their support I don’t think I would have coped with some of the tougher situations. There’s always someone at the end of the phone and I have the full support of a network of dedicated professionals. Together we explore problems and look at mechanisms to manage complex behavioural issues.”

Avril’s enthusiasm and empathetic approach to fostering over the years has certainly payed off. Through forging strong bonds with the children in her care, she’s helped dozens of young people to come to terms with their past and build a brighter future.

“Many of the children I have looked after keep in touch once they have left care”, says Avril. “It’s very touching to receive a letter from a child who moved on some time ago but still has that strong bond with me and my family. We sometimes get together to catch up on what has been going on in their world and to reminisce about the many happy times we spent together as a family unit.”
