April’s story

Archived: Posted October 4, 2016

April and her husband have been fostering with FCA Thames Valley for just over 4 years. They are caring for a little girl of 11, who will be with them until she is at least 18.

April explains: “A year after starting our placement we had the option to go for a ‘Long Term’ placement which we were approved for. This means that she will be with us until she 18 and possibly beyond!

“Every month I attend my local support group which gives me the opportunity to meet with other foster carers. This is a place where I can exchange lots of ideas and views and it’s a great place to meet with other local carers just for a bit of a chat.

“At these groups I can honestly say I have been able to pick-up tips, make new friends and have had the freedom to ask any questions related to my fostering role. I really enjoy these meetings and definitely feel a part of the group.

“My husband and I feel very supported by FCA as an agency and over the years we have built-up a really strong relationship. I meet with my supervising social worker once a month for a one-to-one, and FCA also have a 24/7 telephone service I can use if I need to speak to them at any time.

“I am involved with helping to co-facilitate Journey to Foster which is the training for new foster carers. I very much enjoy doing this and giving new carers an insight into caring, offering real life scenarios first-hand. This has been a very positive experience for me and I have received good feedback from potential new carers too. I am also involved with the mentoring scheme that FCA have in place which means I work closely with a new foster carer, to support, help, and point them in the right direction, which is very rewarding for me.”
