Why do children need foster care?

Frances

There are over 77,000 children in care across the UK – and there are a host of reasons why they need foster care.

It may be because of a family illness, family breakdown and problems at home, or a situation where their welfare is threatened. Many will have experienced neglect and physical, emotional or sexual abuse.

And while their stories will be different, every child will have faced loss and separation from their birth family.

Caring for these children

Their life experiences can cause children and young people in care to express their feelings through difficult and challenging behaviour. Some may throw tantrums, be aggressive or reject your care.

Others may be withdrawn, clingy and act younger than their years.

This can be a result of moving from carer to carer, or simply being placed in care in the first place. It’s important that, as a foster parent, you understand that this is not a reflection on you. You’re there to help a child or young person feel secure, safe and cared for. We’re here to do the same for you.

How you can help

With over 20 years’ experience, we understand that fostering children can sometimes be tough.

That’s why we help you with as much support and training as possible.

We've fostered with other agencies and local authorities but Foster Care Associates have by far exceeded them.

One of the ways we help you bond with your foster child is through Life Story Work. This is a range of services that can help children and young people in care to understand and make sense of their past. We encourage them to document their time in foster care – as well as their positive memories from their time with their birth family.

We also appreciate that though fostering is hugely rewarding, sometimes foster carers, their families, and looked after children sometimes need a change of scenery so we offer relaxation breaks for all of our carers at our award winning Treberfedd Farm.
