Carol’s and Jenny’s Story

Tricia-Dobson-Resi-migrationJenny, a 15 year old girl with a host of emotional complexities and behavioural issues, entered Carol’s care in 2012. By this time Jenny had already experienced the breakdown of six foster placements, spent time in a residential unit and been in trouble with the police. Jenny was known to self-harm, abscond and abuse alcohol, posing a risk to herself and those around her.
Six months on and Jenny has truly turned her life around. Benefitting from the intensive support package offered by FCA, and the patience, stability and warmth from her foster carer Carol, Jenny has flourished into a mature, confident and considerate young woman.

A New Challenge

56 year old, single carer Carol was new to fostering when she met Jenny, but her transferable skills and own life experiences provided a solid foundation for her new role as a specialist foster carer.

“I was a nurse for 28 years,” explained Carol.

“Having worked on a mental health ward, I understood the importance of minimising risks, being non-judgemental and taking time to build mutual respect.”

“When Jenny first came to live with me she would lie and push boundaries, she had no interest in education or taking responsibility for her actions, but with patience and encouragement her attitude changed.”

Making A Difference

After being carefully match with Carol, Jenny was provided with an intensive Team ParentingTM package, including one to one therapy and educational support.  As well as gaining qualifications, Jenny has gained confidence and a sense of emotional wellbeing, she has avoided re-entering residential care and established a positive and lasting relationship with her foster carer and foster carer’s family, an attachment she may never have formed in a children’s home.

“From CHYPSS workers to educational support officers every member of the FCA team respected Jenny’s needs and inspired her to better herself, find enthusiasm for education and learn from her mistakes,” commented Carol.

Jenny was involved throughout the decision making process, allowing the development of a flexible programme that met her needs. Carol was also provided with one-to-one guidance, advice and practical support, providing a stable platform for the placement to succeed.

Carol added: “I joined FCA because they are incredibly child focussed and since becoming a foster carer the support has exceeded my expectations. Seeing Jenny blossom is hugely rewarding, I just wish I had started fostering earlier, it’s honestly the best decision I ever made.”

Road To Success

Jenny’s turnaround is testament to the provisions provided by an FCA residential migration programme and the hard work and commitment made by Carol.

Foster carers can come from all walks of life, but with the right skills and attitude they can prevent a young person from entering or returning to residential care and introduce them to the security of a family home where many children thrive.

“I am really thankful to my carer and all the staff at FCA for supporting me at school and encouraging me to get involved with other activities… I am so grateful for everyone’s help… I won’t forget it.” – Jenny.
