Ben’s Story

Ben came into care at the age of 14 after being separated from his siblings. He initially experienced a host of emotions and anxieties but has since grown into a confident and successful young man.

“Growing up, I remember that it was a difficult time for mum and I know that she struggled to support the family financially. I often missed school and the day after my 14th birthday I was taken into care and placed in a residential children’s home.

It was really frightening and you had to learn to stick up for yourself. I hated it and felt that everyone else was against me and trying to control my life. I just wanted to be with mum and missed the freedom of my home life. I think I spent a month in the residential home before I was moved to a foster family with FCA.

By this time I had become very angry and I was determined to break down the placement. I kind of hoped that I would get to live with mum again, so I used to abscond and bunk off school or I’d go and visit mum for a cup of tea. When my brother came to live with my foster carers it was great and we both enjoyed being able to talk to and support each other. This was the turning point for me and I began to settle down.

Although it must have been hard for my carers, they were really good to us and were especially encouraging towards our education. My school work picked up and I was chuffed to bits when I got seven GCSEs, including an A* in Spanish and an A grade in Art.

I’ve always been passionate about art so I did a National Diploma in Graphics and now I’m studying a Level 3 course in Illustration.

The best thing my carers did for me was to get on really well with mum. They made such an effort to forge a positive relationship with her and even now we still have meals together. Looking back, it’s been a challenging journey. I just wanted my voice to be heard but I didn’t know how to get people to listen.

But being with FCA has given me so many opportunities which I would otherwise not have experienced. I’m even planning on going to University to do a degree in Visual Communications and one day I hope to become a famous illustrator.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way – it’s definitely been a team effort!”
