Carer retires after fostering in Gloucester for 30 years

July 27, 2011

A woman is hanging up her hat after over 30 years of fostering in Gloucester, the last 12 of which have been with FCA Western.

Anita Panzavecchia (69) was the first foster carer to join the Western branch of FCA in March 1998. Together with her husband, John, the couple fostered over 33 children and young people in the last 12 years alone, many of whom had a range of complex emotional and behavioural needs.

A lifetime’s achievement fostering in Gloucester

Sadly, Anita’s husband John died in 2004, but Anita continued her fostering career as a single carer. Her contribution to the lives of young people, to other foster carers in Western and the huge commitment Anita has shown over the years was celebrated at a special event organised by FCA on February 25 2011, at the agency’s Gloucester offices in Maisemore.

“During the years my role as a foster carer has been a hugely rewarding experience,” says Anita. “But for me, the real high has been watching the youngsters overcome many emotional difficulties and start to build positive futures.

“Of course, it has been challenging but I have been fortunate enough to work with a team of professionals who have always been on hand to offer guidance and support whenever I needed it.

“I’m sure I will miss the energy and buzz that comes with fostering. My door will always be open and the children know they are welcome to come and visit me at any time. I just feel the time has come for me to move on. I have very many happy memories to reflect on during my retirement.”

The ongoing support of FCA Western

Richard Brandford, regional manager of FCA Western team said: “FCA is extremely proud of the unswerving commitment Anita has demonstrated during her 12 year fostering career with FCA. She has made a positive difference to everyone whose lives she has touched.

“The achievements of the foster children who have been looked after by Anita are a real credit to her and we are honoured by the first class care she has carried out on behalf of FCA. We wish her a very happy retirement.”

Anita will continue to be a part of FCA Western through her involvement in carer preparation training, foster carer support groups and mentoring.
