A New Carers Perspective
July 15, 2010
New Carers Gary and Liz from our Merseyside office share their experience of becoming foster carers with FCA North West…In the past two months things have changed in our house dramatically. Gone are the cozy nights in front of the TV with a takeaway and a bottle of wine whilst our teenagers amuse themselves, with the odd call for mum and dad’s taxi service! We are now back to alarm calls, school runs, helping with homework (how do they do you multiply using the grid method?) endless meetings, paperwork and bedtime routines. We forgot how exhausting running round after young ones can be, but we wouldn’t have it any other way as we are having the time of our lives!
The assessment process prepared us well and our assessor Hein was brilliant. We constantly refer back to things that we covered in our meetings, cheers Hein! Soon after the Skills to Foster training, we went to panel which we found to be a very positive process.
We waited for three weeks for our first placement, which felt like three years. Every day we would all be constantly ringing home asking if there was any news! One wet Tuesday evening a small, quiet boy arrived; little did we know he wouldn’t stay like that! With the support of our Supervising Social Worker and the staff from Foster Care Associates he has settled well and that little smile makes every day worthwhile.
