Foster Carer Takes Hens Under His Wing
August 08, 2008
Andy Bridger from Crook, has been a foster carer for five years, working with Foster Care Associates (FCA) North East. His ability to provide a safe and secure home environment for troubled youngsters was furthered when he decided to take on responsibility for 12 feathered friends.
Inspired by Jamie Oliver’s campaign to put a stop to the caging of hens for egg production, Andy contacted his local Battery Hen Welfare Trust to identify local hens in need of a new home. After careful nurturing, the hens have produced over 300 free range eggs for the Bridge family to enjoy.
Andy commented: “It is fantastic to nurture the hens who for the best part of their lives have been confined to cages. They have really started to flourish and enjoy their new found outdoor lives. Looking after the hens and collecting the eggs daily can be very therapeutic for the family and for the young people who come into our care.”
FCA is the UK’s leading independent foster care agency with a network of 80 offices UK-wide. With the current national shortage of foster carers around 5,000, FCA is continually seeking to attract new carers who believe they have the determination and understanding to take up this challenging yet hugely rewarding career.
