FCA celebrates Black History Month
November 01, 2011
FCA celebrated Black History Month on Friday 28th October 2011 with a special event at the Faversham office in Kent for foster carers and young people.
Black history and foster care
A selection of FCA’s Kent foster carers representing all ethnicities attended the event, along with their birth children and looked after young people.
The day included a range of children’s activities led by Team Support Worker, Zoe Smith, including Caribbean smoothie making, African mask designing, black culture quizzes and a few games of hula hoop and limbo!
There was also a variety of Caribbean food laid out and different types of music from the black culture playing. FCA Team Manager, Collis Munroe-Parchment, put on a presentation about Black History Month, sharing recipes and general information about different cultures.
Recruiting BME foster carers
FCA is committed to celebrating Black History Month every October as part of our strong culture of equality and diversity, recruiting black and minority ethnic (BME) foster carers and supporting black foster care.

With fair policies both in our recruitment practices and in our interactions with foster carers and young people of all ethnicities, including black foster carers, FCA promotes:
-
Race and ethnicity in foster care
-
Religion and belief in foster care
- BME foster carer recruitment
- Support of children’s unique cultural needs
At FCA, our approach to foster care dictates that, wherever possible, we will match children and young people with foster carers of their own culture. For instance, black children will be placed with any local available black foster carers.
However, we also provide foster carer training to encourage our foster carers to meet any unique cultural needs of children and young people, such as diet and religious practices, regardless of their own cultural identity.
