Fostering Young People in Eastern

July 13, 2011

Roz is a single foster carer who has been with FCA since 2007. During her time fostering in Eastern with FCA, she has cared for young people between the ages of 2 and 16. Roz's inspiration to become the capable foster carer she is today originated with her mother.

“My mother remained with her foster family for 14 years,” says Roz. “She would tell me about the familiarity she’d enjoyed in her foster home. This bond lasted throughout the lives of her foster parents and that of their natural daughter, who became a much-loved godmother to my brothers and me.”

Embarking on a career in fostering

For Roz, the decision to become a foster carer was a lifelong dream that turned out to be difficult to achieve. Being a single mother in a rented house didn’t suit her aspirations; but when she managed to get her own home, she felt she was where she wanted to be, and able to begin her career as a foster carer, doing something she had long desired.

“With my first placement, I was amazed; he was 6 feet tall but he arrived with clothes for a 10- or 11-year-old child! He was a gentle, polite young man with a dry sense of humour but with some learning disability. He stayed with me for about a year attending college, holding down a part time job and getting used to looking after himself.”

The ups and downs of fostering in Eastern

For Roz, as with many other carers, fostering has been a rollercoaster of challenges and successes. While the job of fostering is no easy task, the outcomes of the children and young people cared for more than make up for it.

“The real highs of foster care come with the pleasure in the achievements of the young people. Some things are so small that with any other child you wouldn’t notice them; a totally calm day, the ability to be welcoming, the acceptance that you’re caring for them and about them.

“I think our young people are our greatest assets and I will continue to foster for as long as I can.”
