Fostering Healthy Living
August 1, 2005
Foster Care Associates in the South West will be springing into action over the summer holidays, with a challenge for its foster children to get fit.
FCA, the UK’s leading independent foster care agency, has organised a healthy living challenge spread over four weeks, to encourage children and young people in its care to begin eating better and doing more exercise.
Foster Care Associates is aware of the national rise in obesity in children and have set up a selection of tasks over the holiday to teach its foster children how to live a healthier lifestyle.
Jane Willis, FCA South West Education Liaison Officer has been involved in setting up the campaign. She comments; “We wanted to organise activities for the children and young people in our care that would be interesting and fun but also educational. This healthy living challenge is great because the youngsters can choose how many tasks they want to achieve.
“If they complete one task they get a £10 voucher, if they complete two they receive a second £10 voucher and if they complete three or more tasks they are entered into a prize draw for a new bike. In organising the challenge I have decided I am going to attempt it too, I’m looking forward to the fitness challenge! ”
The campaign includes a selection of tasks to choose from including, trying new sports, cooking a healthy meal, practising independence skills, walking five kilometres a week for four weeks and learning a new sporting skill.
