Afshan Ahmad

Afshan is a Project Development Manager for FCA, based at Central Services in Worcestershire. She has worked for FCA since 1997, when she joined as a sessional support worker while undertaking a Social Work diploma.

On a day to day basis, Afshan works with the Services for Children team, developing tools and training for projects such as Life Story Work and FCA Poetry and Art. She also has frequent contact with sanctuary seeking young people and care leavers.

Race and ethnicity in the workplace

Afshan recognises elements of various diversity strands, but most strongly identifies with ethnicity;

“I am a Muslim, female, single parent who is Pakistani-British born. When anyone asks me to describe my ethnicity, I think to myself, ‘how many generations should I go back?’ Pakistan has experienced much settlement over the centuries; Indo-Aryans, Persians, Greeks, Arabs, Turks, Afghans, Mongols, Sikhs and the British.

“I would most definitely recommend FCA and Core Assets as a diverse and friendly place to work. The Core Assets Race and Ethnicity Staff Forum for example is a place for people to come together, particularly those working in more isolated areas. We address practice issues, organise events like Black History Month…

“It’s an opportunity to mix with peers and role models; people at different levels who share similar experiences. There are lots of role models at all levels in Core Assets who aid and support diversity across the company.”
