Foster carer training

FCA is committed to providing quality foster carer training packages to all of our carers, in order for them to deal with the many demanding and complex aspects of fostering.

Foster carer training is viewed as an important element of FCA’s support package and is provided to foster carers both before their approval and throughout their fostering career.

Training FCA foster carers begins as part of the assessment process and prepares foster carers for the responsibilities that come with the fostering role. It also covers working with FCA. The course follows the Fostering Network’s ‘Skills to Foster’ model.

Training FCA foster carers

In the 12 months following approval, carers complete 'Post Approval Training', which consists of 9 workshops with accompanying activity packs.

These are directly related to the Training, Support and Development Standards, promoted by the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC), which introduces carers to a wide range of fostering related issues and practice.

Ongoing training for foster carers

FCA provides our foster carers with ongoing training courses, which occur at regular intervals at destinations local and convenient to our foster carers. FCA training courses cover a number of topics, including the following key areas:

  • Child protection
  • Working with children who have been abused
  • Safe caring
  • Managing difficult behaviour
  • Identity and self esteem
  • Valuing diversity and promoting equality
  • Recording
  • First Aid
  • Health and safety
  • Health care of fostered children or young people
  • Education of fostered children or young people
  • Empowering children or young people
  • Preparing young people for moving on and adult independence

Foster carer qualifications

FCA supports foster carers towards receiving formal recognition of their skills, knowledge and experience. Many of our foster carers have already achieved or are working towards the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 in Health and Social Care (Children and Young People). FCA foster carers are encouraged and supported to do so through locally-based course programmes.
