How does the process work
The process to becoming a foster carer is unique to each applicant. However, all foster carer applicants share the journey outlined in the application and assessment process, which can take around 4 months (rising to 6 months depending on the complexity of your personal circumstances).
The application process to foster
The application and assessment process has a dual function. It gives you the accurate information you need on the requirements of becoming a foster carer, including what you can expect fostering to involve, and also gives you chance to consider how fostering will affect your life – as well as your family and friends' lives.
It also allows FCA the opportunity to gather all of the relevant and required information about you, including checks and references. The information gathered is then collated in what is known as 'Form F'.
-
The results from the application and assessment process are presented to a fostering panel.
- FCA also uses information gathered during the assessment process to decide which children or young people to ask you to foster.
Supporting foster carer applicants throughout the process
We will support you throughout the process, and simply ask in return that you are as open and honest as possible and give answers that you believe in. Be yourself, raise any concerns as quickly as possible and always ask if there’s anything that you don’t understand or would like more information about.
