Education Liaison Service
FCA has a commitment to ensure all children and young people receive an appropriate education to help them achieve their full potential.
FCA has a team of Education Liaison Officers (ELOs). The ELOs are responsible for ensuring that all children and young people placed with FCA foster carers are in appropriate educational provision and that their support needs are met.
All ELOs have extensive experience of working in the field of education. The majority are teachers, who have worked with children and young people with a variety of needs. They all have a working knowledge of the legislation around young people's support needs, as well as school admissions and exclusions.
ELOs liaise with the foster carer, social worker, education officers, school staff, educational psychologists and the young person themselves to ensure an appropriate school is found. The overwhelming majority of young people attend their local school. If this is not appropriate the ELO will work to arrange personal education provision.
ELOs also give advice and training to foster carers on how best to support the education of the children and young people placed with them, both in and out of school.
Foster Care Associates is nationally recognised with a Leading Aspect Award for securing and maintaining personal education provision.
Additional Support for Learners
Many looked after children and young people need support with their learning. The reasons for this are often complex.
Your local ELO will be able to offer advice and help if you have any concerns.
Looked after children and young people are not alone in needing extra help at school. Current estimates show that around 20% of all children and young people will need extra support at some point in their school life.
